Dark Deception:

Introduction:

The initial installment in the series was launched in 1996 for the PlayStation console. Known as "Tecmo's Dark Deception: Invitation to Darkness" in English-speaking regions, it held the titles "Kokumeikan" (刻命館) in Japan and "Devil's Deception" in Europe. This first entry diverges significantly from its successors in almost every aspect. Unlike its sequels, it adopts a first-person perspective akin to the King's Field series. The plot revolves around an unnamed prince who, after being unjustly framed for his father's murder by his brother Yurias, strikes a pact with the Devil. This pact grants him dominion over the Castle of the Damned, enabling him to exact revenge on his brother and claim Princess Fiana, the player character's fiancée.

The game carries a Teen rating due to its "animated violence" and "animated blood." Notably, the game's jewel case includes an extra cautionary message: "WARNING: This game contains demonic references and may be inappropriate for some individuals." Subsequent titles in the Deception series received Mature ratings.

Games:

The original Deception game introduces several features that are absent from its successors. It employs a first-person viewpoint, allowing players to place multiple traps in rooms based on available space and Magic Points. Additionally, monsters can be formed from the remains of defeated invaders and summoned using "Block Orbs." The Castle of the Damned can be expanded, and trap families offer only two upgrades, which are variations of existing traps. This entry has a strong role-playing focus, emphasizing item use, stat enhancement through upgrades, and character level progression through combat. The game offers six distinct endings achievable by making diverse choices or achieving specific accomplishments. Saving progress demands a significant portion of a memory card.

Shifting to a third-person perspective and emphasizing trap combos, "Kagero: Deception II," released as "Kagero: Kokumeikan Shinsho" in Japan, laid the groundwork for subsequent Deception titles. This sequel, released two years after its predecessor, centers on Millennia, a manipulated puppet guarding the immortal Timenoids. These beings govern human lives and are coveted for their power. Millennia becomes embroiled in the conflict between her kind and their captors, with the player determining her allegiance.

The altered trap mechanics in this game introduce greater strategic depth, allowing traps to interact in intricate sequences. Healing is accomplished through "loons," luminous blue crystals with limited uses. Trap upgrades are facilitated by points earned from eliminating invaders. The game presents six secret traps achievable through replay and four different endings. Traps require recharge time between uses. Game saves occupy one block of memory.

In Japan, "Trapt" was marketed as "Kagero II: Dark Illusion." Players control Princess Allura, who flees her kingdom due to a wrongful accusation and forms a demonic contract with "Fiend" to avenge her predicament.

Deception:

Unique to this game are "Dark Illusions," specialized traps requiring specific triggers. Side stories provide alternate scenarios and background details. The game includes Survival Mode and requires resource management for trap creation. Secret traps and settings are unlockable. Saving necessitates 64K of free space on a PS2 memory card.

"Deception IV: Blood Ties," also known as "Kagero: Dark Side Princess" in Japan, is available for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. Serving as a successor to "Deception III: Dark Delusion," it revisits the original game's trap-based strategy gameplay. The release dates are February 27, 2014 in Japan, March 25 in North America, and March 28 in Europe.

"Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess," known as "Kagero: Another Princess" in Japan, is an expansion to "Deception IV: Blood Ties." The new protagonist, Velguirie, possesses unique attack abilities. Quest Mode introduces encounters with characters from previous titles. These characters can also be utilized by players, though unlocking methods remain undisclosed.
